What began as the Plano Tortilla Factory in 1986 has evolved into Aparicio's Plano Tortilla Factory & Cafe, and the evolution continues as this East Plano gem becomes less of a secret and more of a popular destination for a unique culinary and ethnic experience.

The Aparicio family purchased the Tortilla Factory in 1989 and expanded it from a favorite take-out outlet to a restaurant that could seat 40 diners. The loyal following grew, and Aparicio’s expanded again to accommodate up to 75. Word of mouth and numerous rave reviews from restaurant critics all over Texas have drawn increasingly enthusiastic crowds- most of whom instantly became regulars- and have prompted Juan Aparicio to pull out all the stops and expand his business into the full-service Mexican restaurant he and his wife, Martina, have always dreamed of owning.

Born in Seguin, Texas, the oldest of three brothers and three sisters, Juan learned early in life that he was expected to work to help the family make ends meet. Because he was needed to work in the fields and with the farm animals, Juan had to give up schooling after completing the third grade. But one thing that always came naturally to him was working with numbers. He held jobs as a cotton ginner, a truck driver and a plumber before forming his own trenching business, which has grown to one of the largest in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Martina was born fifth in a family of 10 children, in Hamlin, Texas. When she was old enough, she began helping her father with the financial aspects of his work with seasonal laborers. The family moved frequently, so Martina only attended school through the ninth grade. After she and Juan married and began raising their family, she worked as a teacher’s aide and earned her general equivalency diploma. Martina has also worked as a waitress, a line assembler and a store clerk, and eventually started her own business as a seamstress.

A lifelong quest for personal improvement and a commitment to family and community have allowed the Aparicios to rise above the limitations of their childhood to achieve the American dream. They are visibly proud of the reputation their quality homemade food and clean kitchen have earned. The Tortilla Factory that supplies the Dallas Cowboys and a number of grocery stores, has been named “Best Business Power Lunch” and has ranked among D Magazine’s top 15 Mexican restaurants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
